Types of Collisions
Rear-end collisions:
- Rear-end collisions occur when one driver’s vehicle slams into the vehicle in front of him or her, after not paying attention or being unable to stop. While it may be clear who caused the accident, it might not be clear why the accident occurred. Rear-end collisions happen most frequently at stop signs or stoplights, and they also can happen when cars slow down to avoid an accident, because of bad traffic, or while going through a construction or school zone. Rear-end collisions can occur because of bad road conditions, especially when the vehicle’s brakes do not work as expected. However, rear-end collisions can also be caused by such factors as tailgating, texting, or aggressive driving.
- Generally, rear-end auto accidents are the least fatal type of car crash, but they are the most common type of accident in the U.S. Rear-end collisions can have major issues for those involved, potentially leading to broken bones and other serious injuries that may last a lifetime. When cars speed up and then stop abruptly, those sudden changes in speed can lead to whiplash or concussions. The injuries can range from minor to serious or even life-threatening. Such whiplash injuries from these collisions may take time to develop, and minor neck pain right after the accident may turn into major injuries further down the road. This can lead to years of costly treatment and physical therapy.
Head-on collisions:
- Head-on collisions between two vehicles are among the most dangerous types of auto accidents, and they often cause serious injuries for the driver and any passengers inside. Such collisions occur due to excessive speeding, drunk driving, falling asleep at the wheel, and going the wrong way on a one-way street or freeway ramp, among other causes. If you or a loved one has been injured because of the actions of another driver in a head-on collision, it is important to hold the other driver accountable and to recover the compensation that you deserve.
- Head-on collisions are almost always the result of negligence on the part of one or both drivers. Head-on collisions usually result in different types of injuries than rear-end collisions, though both tend to cause injury to the neck or back. The nature of head-on collisions results in certain types of injuries. Serious head injuries result often, because the driver and passengers are likely to hit their heads against the dashboard or headrests. Injurious cuts may occur due to shattered glass. Seatbelt restraints and the steering wheel can cause injury to the chest or ribcage areas. In very serious cases, the injured person might never fully recover. We will work hard to help with injuries resulting from accidents, such as:
- spinal cord injury
- burns
- amputations
- broken bones
- partial or full paralysis
T-Bone Collisions
- T-bone collisions, also known as side-impact collisions or broadside collisions occur normally at an intersection where the side of one vehicle is hit by the front of another, essentially forming a T-shape. Often, other vehicles or people nearby may become involved in the accident, as the force from the collision will cause the sideways car to move out of control. Broadside collisions are most often the result of a failure to yield, a failure to stop at an intersection, or disregard for right of way in a parking lot. Unsuspecting drivers and passengers may sustain injuries like broken bones, spinal cord injuries, head and brain injuries, or neck and back injuries.
- Part of the reason for the severity of T-bone collisions is that the sides of vehicles in this case provide much less protection from impact than the front or back of the vehicle. T-bone crashes tend to result in a much smaller barrier between oncoming traffic and a vehicle occupant, and they have less space for impact-absorbing equipment in vehicles.
